Yr1 spellings - given out on the 7th Oct., to be tested on the 14th Oct.

Learning Strategies:

 

Look, say, cover, write, check.

 

  • Look at the word carefully.
  • Sat it out loud.
  • Say the word both as you would normally and then again enunciating any silent letters., e.g. Wed-nes-day.
  • Cover the word with a piece of paper or your hand. Write the word down from memory. Check your answer letter by letter. If you've got it wrong, write it out again correctly. 

 

  • Use the word in a sentence to help gain understanding and context.

 

  • Using sounds to breakup and blend.

E.g. subway s-u-b-w-ay.

 

  • Using syllables to breakup and blend.

E.g. subway sub/way.

 

  • Mnemonics 

Using an acrostic poem or rhyme to remember the spelling.

E.g. because - big elephants can always understand smaller elephants.

 

Spelling activities ideas:

 

  • Hangman
  • Write sentences 
  • Letter tennis - spell the words by taking turns to say one letter at a time.
  • Beat the clock - time how long it takes for them to write their spellings and see if they can beat their time.
  • Word searches or crosswords
