Curriculum Statement 

Bishop Pursglove C.E. Primary School aims to provide an exciting curriculum, which is relevant to our children, but which also makes them want to find out more and enriches their lives, both now and in the future. Our curriculum complies with our duties in the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational  Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. It is accessible to all.   

Principles

The principles which underpin our curriculum are:

• Inspire enjoyment, achievement and aspiration through engaging, exciting and stimulating activities and environments;
• Develop and challenge every child to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to succeed as learners throughout their life;
• Ensure equal rights of access to each area of the curriculum, irrespective of ability, gender and ethnic or cultural backgrounds;
• Instill the values of democracy, liberty, respect and tolerance. We celebrate all our abilities and our differences.

• Curriculum Development

  When planning our curriculum, at the very forefront, is the absolute desire to excite and challenge all pupils whilst providing them with the essential knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they will undoubtedly face in life beyond Tideswell.

  Determining the design of the curriculum (including the concepts and skills pupils must grasp), are the endpoints our school wishes the pupils to reach. Since knowledge exists in rich schemata, we ensure that our pupils are taught concepts and skills in an order that enables them to make useful connections. Within our school curriculum, vocabulary plays a significant part in embodying and communicating concepts through reading, exploration of new vocabulary and its meaning within contexts that stimulate our pupils’ thinking.

  Underpinning our curriculum design and sequencing is our school’s vision. We value every child and every moment and therefore our curriculum is structured to ensure that our pupils can be the best that they can be by providing them with the building blocks of what they need to know, remember and be able to do to succeed. As our pupils journey throughout school, they know more and have more capacity to learn.

  From the very beginning of their school life, Bishop Pursglove works closely with our families, our local schools’ cluster and the local community to provide links and experience in and around school. Working alongside other organisations brings meaning and opportunities to the children in both school and the wider world.

  We also feel it is vitally important to engender children’s interest in the world around them. By providing new opportunities and exciting experiences we hope to give the children aspirations for their future and to prepare them for life outside school.

Each topic covers all the foundation subjects apart from RE and MFL. The children will also use the skills learnt in English and Maths within each topic.

There is also a daily English and Maths lesson taught. We follow The Little Wandle Letter and Sounds scheme to teach phonics.

Whilst RE is not part of the National Curriculum, there is a statutory requirement, under the 1988 Education Reform Act, that it should form part of the school’s curriculum. School uses the Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus and the Understanding Christianity resource. Parents have a right to withdraw their child from these lessons if they wish.
